About Clan Rose of Kilravock
Perched on a bluff above the River Nairn between Inverness and Nairn, Kilravock Castle (pronounced “Kil-rawk”) has been the clan’s seat since about 1460 and still anchors their traditional country of fertile straths and birch-covered ridges on the Moray Firth’s south shore. The Roses are Norman in origin, unrelated to the Celtic Earls of Ross; King John Balliol made them Barons of Kilravock in 1293, and—remarkably—every chief has succeeded in an unbroken direct line, usually named Hugh. Their crest shows a harp, their plant badge is wild rosemary, and the defiantly plain motto “Constant and True” has summed up the lineage for more than seven centuries.
