About Clan Lindsay
The Lindsays take their name from Lindsey in Lincolnshire and came north in the twelfth century, when Sir Walter de Lindsay followed David, Earl of Huntingdon, the future King David I, into Scotland. Settled first at Crawford in Lanarkshire and later at Edzell in Angus and Balcarres in Fife, the family became Earls of Crawford in 1398, one of the oldest earldoms in Scotland. The first earl, Sir David Lindsay, is remembered for his victory in a tournament on London Bridge before Richard II in 1390, and the chief of the name still holds the earldoms of Crawford and Balcarres today.
