About Clan Murray
The Murrays take their name from the province of Moray and trace their line to Freskin, a Flemish knight granted lands there by King David I around 1130. The family rose through Tullibardine in Perthshire to become Dukes of Atholl, with Blair Castle as their seat and the Atholl Highlanders, Europe’s only legal private army, still parading there each May. The crest itself came to the Murrays with the Stewart earldom of Atholl, granted in 1475.
